How's the condition of your dump truck tower? Is it clean, tight, and moving the way it should? Or is it stiff, corroded, and something you've been putting off dealing with?

Like all hydraulic components, these towers need consistent attention to remain in optimal working condition. A lack of maintenance can eventually lead to issues like binding cables, cracked mounting plates, or a tower that won't respond the way you need it to. To help you stay ahead of that, here are some tips for maintaining dump truck control towers.

Keep Corrosion Off the Tower Frame

Rust is the first problem you'll notice on a neglected tower, and it doesn't stay on the surface. Once corrosion gets into the frame, it works into joints, weakens the structural integrity of the whole assembly, and makes future repairs harder.

After every job in wet or muddy conditions, rinse the tower frame down and let it dry before the truck sits. A rust-inhibiting spray applied to exposed metal a few times a year will buy you a lot of time. If you already see surface rust forming, wire brush it off before it spreads further. Waiting on that one never works in your favor.

Inspect the Mounting Hardware Regularly

The bolts and brackets holding your tower in place are working against vibration every single time the truck moves. Over time, that constant movement loosens hardware in ways that aren't always obvious until something shifts unexpectedly.

Get into the habit of checking every bolt at least once a month during active use seasons. Torque anything that's backed off to spec, and swap out any fastener that shows signs of stretch or thread damage. A loose tower isn't just a maintenance problem; it's a safety problem that gets expensive quickly.

Check the Cables and Linkages for Wear

The cables and linkages connected to your tower do a lot of quiet work, and they tend to show wear before anything else does. Look for fraying on cables, especially near attachment points where the stress concentrates. Check linkage pins for slop or side-to-side movement that wasn't there before. If a pin is worn enough that the linkage rattles, it's already past the point where you should have replaced it. Worn linkages cause sloppy tower movement, which puts additional stress on parts downstream. Catching this early keeps the repair contained.

Lubricate All Moving Parts on Schedule

This one doesn't require a long explanation. Moving parts without enough lubrication wear faster, run hotter, and eventually seize. Your tower has pivot points, pins, and hinges that all need grease to move without grinding against each other. A standard grease gun and the right lubricant for your climate is all you need.

In colder climates, a low-temperature grease keeps things moving when temps drop. In warmer conditions, a higher viscosity grease stays in place through the heat. Check your manufacturer's spec if you're not sure which one to use, and stick to a lubrication schedule rather than waiting until something stiffens up.

Look for Cracks in Structural Plates

Stress cracks in the tower's structural plates are easy to miss because they often start small and hide in corners or along weld lines. A crack that looks minor today can open up under load, and a failure at the tower plate during operation isn’t a situation you want to deal with in the field.

During your regular inspections, take a flashlight to every plate surface and look along the edges of welds. If you find a crack, don't run the truck until it's been professionally assessed. Some cracks are weldable. Others mean the plate needs to come out entirely.

Keep the Control Mechanism Free of Debris

Dirt, gravel, and debris pack into the control mechanism over time and cause more grief than most operators expect. When grit gets into the moving parts of the control assembly, it accelerates wear on the contact surfaces and can cause the control to stick or respond inconsistently.

After jobs where the truck has been in heavy dust or debris, blow out the control area with compressed air. If the mechanism feels grabby or slow to respond, that's a sign something has already worked its way in. Cleaning it out at that point beats replacing components later.

Examine the Tower's Range of Motion

Your tower should move through its full range without resistance or noise. If you notice it stopping short, dragging in one direction, or producing a grinding sound at any point in the cycle, something is off.

Restricted range of motion often comes from accumulated debris, a worn component, or a fastener that's migrated into the wrong position. Run the tower through a full cycle at the start of each work week and pay attention to how it feels. You'll notice a developing problem faster by watching for changes in performance than by waiting for something to fail during a job.

Address Hydraulic Fluid Contamination Quickly

If hydraulic fluid is getting into areas of the tower where it shouldn't be, or if you notice discoloration or cloudiness in the fluid itself, contamination is already underway. Contaminated fluid loses its ability to transfer pressure effectively, which puts strain on every component in the hydraulic system connected to the tower.

If you spot a leak around the tower's hydraulic connections, track it to the source before the fluid level drops far enough to cause a pressure problem. Contaminated fluid should be flushed and replaced rather than topped off.

Document What You Find During Each Inspection

Writing down what you find during each inspection sounds like paperwork nobody wants, but it saves a lot of guesswork down the road. When you note the date, what you checked, and anything you repaired or tightened, you build a record that shows you exactly when a component started deteriorating. Patterns show up in writing that never show up in memory, and that's where you catch a part trending toward failure before it gets there.
