Even the smallest fifth wheel hitch misalignment can cause uneven weight distribution across your axles, which puts extra stress on your suspension, tires, and frame over long hauls. Check Your Trailer's Level Before You Touch Anything

Before you start loosening bolts, know what you're working with. Hook up your trailer on flat ground and use a level on the trailer floor or frame rail. You're looking for true horizontal—nose-up or nose-down tells you exactly which direction you need to move the fifth wheel.
A nose-down trailer pushes extra weight onto the rear axles of the tractor and lifts load off the steer axle. A nose-up trailer does the opposite, overloading the steer axle. Neither is where you want to be.
Know Where Your Fifth Wheel Sits on the Tractor Frame
The fifth wheel plate mounts to a sliding base on the tractor frame, and that base can move forward or backward. But height comes from the mounting brackets, not the slide position. The brackets bolt to the frame at a fixed height, and that height is what determines where the kingpin connects relative to the trailer's nose.
If you're not sure how your fifth wheel is mounted, pull the spec sheet for your tractor or look up the OEM bracket dimensions. Working from guesswork on bracket height costs you more time than pulling the numbers first.
Understand the Kingpin Height on Your Trailer
The kingpin is the pin on the trailer's nose that locks into the fifth wheel. Its height above the ground—measured with the trailer on level pavement and unloaded—gives you a baseline for where your fifth wheel plate needs to sit.
Standard kingpin height for most 53-foot trailers runs around 47 to 49 inches from the ground to the center of the kingpin. If your fifth wheel plate sits lower or higher than that range, the trailer won't ride level once you're coupled. Measure the kingpin height on your specific trailer before you assume it matches standard.
Adjust the Fifth Wheel Mounting Brackets for Coarse Height Changes
If you need a significant height change—more than what a simple shim can fix—you're looking at remounting the brackets. The mounting brackets bolt to the frame rails, and most aftermarket brackets come with multiple bolt-hole positions that let you raise or lower the plate height in set increments.
Drop the fifth wheel assembly, reposition the brackets to the appropriate hole pattern, and torque the hardware back to spec. Don't skip the torque spec here. Under-torqued bracket bolts work loose under load, and that's a failure you don't want at highway speed.
Use Shims for Fine-Tuning the Height
Once your brackets are in the right position, small height corrections come from shimming. Shim plates go between the mounting bracket and the frame rail, lifting the entire fifth wheel assembly by the shim's thickness.
A quarter-inch shim changes your coupling height by a quarter inch—straightforward math, but it adds up fast if you stack too many. Most setups don't need more than half an inch of shimming. If you're reaching for more than that, go back to the bracket position instead of stacking shims.
Recheck the Slide Position After Height Adjustments
Sliding fifth wheels let you move the coupling point forward or backward on the tractor frame, which shifts axle weight distribution. After any height adjustment, the slide position needs a fresh look.
Moving the fifth wheel forward puts more weight on the steer axle. Moving it back shifts weight toward the drive axles. You're balancing both height and slide position to land on a setup that keeps all axle weights legal and the trailer level. Adjust one variable at a time so you know what's actually changing the result.
Account for Load Weight When You Set the Height
An empty trailer sits differently than a loaded one. Suspension compresses under load, which can change your effective coupling height by half an inch or more depending on your spring rates and load weight.
If you're setting height on an empty trailer, factor in how much your tractor's rear suspension will drop once the trailer is loaded. Running a quick measurement with a representative load on the trailer before you finalize the height saves you from dialing in a perfect empty-trailer setup that rides nose-up once you're at full weight.
Verify Coupling Height Matches the Landing Gear Clearance
When you drop the trailer, the landing gear legs need to reach the ground with the trailer level. If the fifth wheel sits too high, the trailer nose rides up and the landing gear can't extend far enough to make solid contact. If it sits too low, the trailer nose drops and the legs bottom out before they support the weight.
Run through a full drop-and-crank cycle after any height change to confirm the landing gear works through its full range without binding or leaving the trailer tilted.
Inspect the Locking Jaw Engagement After Height Changes
Fifth wheel height affects more than just trailer levelness. It changes the angle at which the kingpin enters the throat and seats against the locking jaw. A plate that's too high or too low can cause a partial engagement where the jaw doesn't fully close around the kingpin.
After coupling, tug the trailer forward with the brakes set. Watch and listen for movement at the hitch. If there's any play, pull apart and recheck the coupling.
Test the Setup Loaded Before Committing to the Final Height
Make one loaded run before you call the adjustment final. Recheck the trailer level with cargo on board, recheck axle weights at a scale, and walk the coupling point again after the trailer has settled under load.
Height adjustment on a fifth wheel isn't a one-shot process. The numbers on the ground and the numbers on the scale tell you whether the setup is actually working, and it's worth the time to confirm both before the rig goes into regular rotation.
Know When Height Adjustment Isn't Enough

Sometimes you've adjusted everything within spec and the connection still isn't sitting right. Worn jaws, a cracked plate, or a damaged king pin can all create problems that no amount of height adjustment will fix. If you're seeing unusual wear patterns on your fifth wheel plate, or if the king pin isn't seating fully even when the heights match, the hardware itself may be the issue.
